James B. McPherson Elementary accepting applications for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program for grades six, seven and eight.

McPherson School, located at 4728 N. Wolcott, is a Magnet Cluster School with the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) as its focus.  This program provides a framework of academic challenges and life skills appropriate to the sixth, seventh and eighth grade student while preparing students to take their place in a global world.

Students are encouraged to develop intercultural awareness as well as a genuine understanding of their own history and traditions; to achieve a firm command of their language and the acquisition of a foreign language; and to develop awareness of the media and competence in information technology.

The IBMYP develops critical thinkers by encouraging students to ask questions and make connections; it inspires in students a concern for the environment and the community and provides students with the skills they need to succeed in an increasingly interconnected world by fostering an understanding of people’s common humanity.

McPherson’s IBMYP students are engaged in the study of language arts, Spanish., humanities, science, technology, math, fine arts, physical education, and advanced research as well as various extra curricular activities and community and service. Private Schools

St. Benedict High School is currently  multi-disciplinary Performing Arts Academy for its curriculum in the 2008-2009 school year, which will be the only academy of its kind in the Archdiocese of Chicago.

"This exciting program is designed specifically for the advanced student who plans to either receive a full college scholarship in the arts or eventually become a professional in the entertainment industry," said Sante Iacovelli, principal of St. Benedict High School.  In addition to a full course load at our high school, students of the Performing Arts Academy will take 15 additional hours of performing arts classes each week, he said.

Many high schools now offer extracurricular arts programs, such as school plays, but we're taking it to the next level, said Iacovelli.  The new program will offer a heavy schedule of dance, voice and drama classes, Students must first apply to St. Benedict High School where they will take a full academic college preparatory course load and will then be considered for a limited number of class openings in the new academy. The Academy will offer three hours of class each school day following regular classes.

St. Benedict is teaming up with The Entertainment Project, a professional entertainment management company headed by Timothy Kiernan, to offer the program. Classes will be taught by Kiernan and his associates and will also draw upon professionals from the Chicago arts community.

The academy will hold classes at the St. Benedict campus located at 3900 N. Leavitt near Irving Park Road, but will also visit other arts venues to enrich the educational experience, Kiernan said. The school has constructed a new dance studio and renovated its Kittler Auditorium for performances.

Set in the heart of the north side of Chicago, St. Benedict High School Performing Arts Academy is convenient to public transportation routes, making it minutes away from highly regarded venues at Steppenwolf Theater, The Lyric Opera of Chicago, Goodman Theater, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Second City Theater and many neighborhood theaters.

Parents and students can obtain additional information for the limited number of openings by calling 773/509-3869 or visiting stbensarts.com. Tuition for the Academy is $400 per month in addition to the high school regular tuition.
